Duck Adoptions
Our Duck Program
When we have ducks available for adoption, it is typically after we have done a tactical rescue to recover abandoned ducks in the wild. Domestic ducks are often purchased as ducklings from farm supply stores and then cruelly and illegally dumped at public parks and ponds. This problem is caused by the public’s unrestrained access to complicated and messy birds at a very cheap price, as well as the lack of education surrounding the needs of these birds. Make no mistake: They live short, brutal lives in the wild. Domestic ducks are no different from domestic dogs and cats in that that they require human care to both thrive and survive.
After being recovered, rescued ducks spend a minimum of 30 days in quarantine away from other birds. This is to eliminate the chance of HPAI (highly pathogenic avian flu) and other diseases from contaminating any future flocks. We tend any wounds or infections they gained while trying to survive in the wild, and screen their feces for internal parasites. Any complex medical problems are assessed by a board-certified avian veterinarian. By the time quarantine is over, the ducks are happy, healthy, and ready to start over in a brand new flock of their own!
Adoption Criteria
Caretaking that is centered around companionship, not agricultural production
A predator-proof daytime living space (e.g. a secure run or aviary when not directly supervised)
A completely enclosed, predator-proof nighttime sleeping space (e.g. a coop, shed, or barn)
Access to water such as kiddie pools or small ponds that can be treated, scrubbed, or otherwise kept clean and free from predators
Access to professional veterinary care should they ever need it
Please note that we do not accept homes wishing to breed, slaughter, trade, or consume their ducks, nor do we accept 100% free-ranging circumstances or large unfenced ponds/creeks.
