Meet the Geese

Jelly

Jelly is a grey and white mixed-breed gander who is utterly obsessed with his life partner Dewy. A reserved gander, Jelly avoids conflict and is mostly just interested in being glued to Dewy’s side. He occasionally will charge a human who gets too close, so watch out! The two together are confident, curious, and enjoy their days swimming, preening, and mating here at the sanctuary.

Jelly arrived to the sanctuary as a tiny gosling with his sister Boba! Though they have grown distant from one another as they settled into romantic partnerships, as goslings they were an inseparable dynamic duo. They were surrendered as hatchlings when their original caretakers found that geese are prohibited within their city's limits. These two faced the threat of being seized by police, at which point they would likely be euthanized or find themselves an uncompassionate person's meal. Luckily, they have found sanctuary here at Sweet Peace, where they can enjoy decades of residency in honk haven.

Dewdrop

Dewdrop “Dewy” is a white mixed-breed gander whose bonded life partner is Jelly. Dewy fiercely defends Jelly with his life, and spends lots of his time running and hissing when humans are around. He enjoys swimming in the 500 gallon pool, picking at watermelon and lettuce, and making sure that nobody gets too close to Jelly. Walking, swimming, napping, foraging… all of Dewy’s daily activities happen right beside the love of his life.

Dewy was surrendered by a farm where he was being used as an educational tool for children. As a gosling, he was forced to be handled often, so he was absolutely exhausted by the time he made it here. Perhaps this is why he feels the need to defend himself and Jelly. We try to give him his space so that he can live as peacefully as possible!

Boba

Boba is a brown Chinese goose with a free-spirit and a loud, low honk. Her friendly and curious personality is matched only by her dedication to living on her terms and mating with whoever she pleases (though usually it’s Rainn). Boba enjoys lots of pool time and eating the eggs that she lays, as long as a human friend has cracked them into a bowl for her.

Boba arrived to the sanctuary as a tiny gosling with her brother Jelly!

Stormi

Stormi is a brown Toulouse gander with a shy, polite disposition. He doesn’t bother other ganders, and he is respectful to everyone. Stormi has had a slew of unsuccessful boyfriends but now lives solo, choosing to prioritize his friendship with Rainn and Boba!

Stormi arrived to the sanctuary as a young adult, originally having been raised by a loving family. They rescued him from a farm where the rest of his family had been eaten by predators, and all that remained was this tiny gosling. His new parents gave him a loving home until it became clear he needed goose friends. After some time passed and he was no longer a fuzzy little fluffball, he started showing some natural goose behaviors towards the ducks he was raised with. This unfortunately put them in a dangerous position. His family did the best thing for him and sought help from sanctuaries, eventually connecting with us. The goose flock is so lucky to have him!

Rainn

Rainn is a brown Toulouse gander with an alpha personality. He is independent, bisexual, flirts with other ganders, but chooses to mate with Boba! Rainn used to be one of hundreds of geese abandoned in a massive neglect case that was addressed in the winter of 2022. All of his siblings and family were recovered and given medical care by sanctuaries working the case, but Rainn chose to evade his rescuers for months. Unlike other domestic geese, Rainn was shockingly born with the ability to fly! Since the farm was all he ever knew, he continued to return and fly back when rescuers weren't pursuing him. He's lucky that it was compassionate sanctuary workers that eventually caught him, rather than a predator that would take advantage of his slow, vulnerable domestic qualities. Being the very last of over one hundred geese, he's no longer starving and competing to survive. He is a safe, well-fed, and unique member of the goose flock.

Breezy

Breezy is a Toulouse goose found wandering the streets of Baltimore. Being a domestic goose, the city was no place for her, let alone that she was only a few months old and had no friends to help her survive! We don't know how long she was making it on her own, but she has a feather condition called angel wing that is a result from poor nutrition as a gosling. If she were a wild goose, this would be a death sentence as it would prevent her from flying. However, since she’s a domestic goose, getting off the ground was never in the cards for her anyway! A good Samaritan found Breezy and helped her to a vet's office, who then contacted us. Breezy is shy, reserved, and still finding her place in the goose flock. We hope that she will form a partnership with another goose soon!

Tilburt

Tilburt arrived with his late sister Rosepetal as very young ducklings. They were some of our first residents of the sanctuary! Tilburt is a Muscovy duck with an amazing personality. He is always cracking us up with his joie de vivre, excitedly wagging his tail and chuckling in Muscovy fashion as bargain for a leafy snack. Being so large, Tilburt is the king of the coop and often reminds his goose friends of this.

Tilburt has a very wily personality, which is typical of a Muscovy duck. He is large and domineering, so the best match for him is to live with geese, who he is happy to bond and hang out with. He is so rowdy he can be a bit too much for other residents, particularly the ducks. Despite this, he is great with people. He enjoys having his cheeks rubbed! He also likes bobbing for wild raspberries, cucumbers, and other yummy things he might get in his water bowl.

Gifford & Alduin

Like Tilburt, Gifford & Alduin are Muscovy drakes that are much better suited to live with geese rather than other smaller domestic ducks. These bonded brothers were adopted to be same-species companions with Tilburt! In the goose flock, they fit right in. Gifford and Alduin keep to themselves and enjoy foraging and napping. They are remarkably quiet compared to the cacophony generated by their goose companions. We rescued them from abandonment at the Gifford Pinchot State Park, where they were struggling to survive on a lake. Like many of our other ducks, these two are survivors of duck dumping. Now they spend their days in safety, side-by-side.
