Meet the Pigs
Honeybee
Honeybee is a happy-go-lucky, social, and special girl! Once very shy and unable to defend herself from the 80 pigs that she was hoarded with at her previous farm, Honeybee is now a unique and outgoing girl. Because her family had been breeding with each other for a while, little Honeybee ended up with some quirks that make her special. Excessive inbreeding caused her to have crossed eyes which results in visual difficulties, so she needs a specialized feed routine away from the rest of the herd and extra patience with finding things like treats in front of her. But we love her this way! Her morning routine even involves “dancing” while an attending human helps her get the last food out of her bowl. Honeybee is a social butterfly and loves eating watermelon, getting scratches on her head and back, and spending time with her sister Ladybug!
Ladybug
Ladybug is a young mixed pig and Honeybee's sister! She is mostly pot-bellied with a little bit of Kune Kune that gives her an adorably chubby face and wattles that hang off of her neck. She has a spot on her nose just like a ladybug! But maybe we should have swapped their names, because Ladybug is the QUEEN BEE. She is the loudest and bossiest pig, and might give you a little nip if you didn't bring her highness any treats. But behind her deep grunts and impressive mohawk, she is actually a very friendly girl and will even flop over for a belly rub if so inclined. Ladybug loves snuggling with her sister Honeybee, finding sprigs of grass to munch on, and rooting around in the dirt. She came from the same hoarding case as her sister, and was the only pig that loved her enough not to bully her there. When gentle Honeybee needed her sister to help her feel safe, Ladybug needed her just as much. We are so happy to provide safety for these pigs where they can stay together forever.
Big Blue
Big Blue is a very handsome and large pot-bellied pig! He has an incredibly sweet and gentle soul, and had a long road to physical and emotional recovery after the treatment he received at a hoarding farm. Blue saw the worst of the treatment that the survivors experienced, and unfortunately he has the emotional and physical scars to prove it. It is likely that humans, dogs, and other pigs attacked him relentlessly. He needed a lot of patience and gentleness to recover, as well as a diet plan to get him to lose some weight. Despite his past, he has chosen peace, and Blue is a sweet and shy boy who just wants to feel safe. Today he is loving life with his best friend Butterbean in the piggy woods, spending his days napping, rooting for snacks in the dirt, and listening to the creek.
Butterbean
Butterbean is Big Blue's right hand man! He is a small Juliana pig with cute black spots to match. Butterbean is very shy but loves to eat. He is small but mighty and uses his strength to boss the other pigs around for every last scrap at mealtime. But, he shows his love for his big brother Blue by sticking beside him and even cuddling together in their big straw bed. Butterbean endured the same treatment at the hoarding farm as the other pot-bellied pigs, unfortunately, so he is very shy with humans. Butterbean's weight fluctuates a lot with his metabolism so we are constantly adjusting his meals to meet his special needs. These kids have been through a lot, but each pig is so special in their strength, intelligence, and forgiveness. A little love can go a long way!
Sugarloaf
Sugar is a super sweet Kune Kune girl with a horrendous backstory! One day, a very kind lady was attending a children’s party where she saw Sugar as the main attraction. It turns out that Sugar was bought from an auction for just $1 to serve as entertainment for the “hog wild” themed party, and she was then set to be butchered afterwards. Seeing the injustice of the situation, the woman pleaded for Sugar's life. It worked! She was only given a couple days to find Sugar a home, but she found us just in time. We were able to take Sugar in right away and offer her asylum in our barn. There she was quarantined as we brought her up to date on her vaccines and got her spayed. She was extremely overweight, fat blind, and had overgrown hooves, but you would never guess that about her today!
Sugar has an amazing personality and will flop over for a belly-rub for anyone that is kind to her. Her easygoing, kind-hearted nature serves her well in the pig herd! She also loves to pant and oink when meeting new humans or her favorite human friends. Sugar is super affectionate and a social butterfly of the pig woods!
Grand Slam
Grand Slam, aka Slammy, is a sassy white pot-bellied pig who originated from a severe hoarding case in New York state. He arrived severely overweight, limping, with overgrown hooves and infected wounds on his body. It is likely that the stress of the hoarding case had caused his previous herd to attack one another. After he was quarantined and healed here at the sanctuary, the ostracization and trauma from his previous situation made it very hard for him to acclimate to living with other pigs again. Slammy needed a special feeding routine and patience in order to overcome his struggles and accept piggy companionship once more. Now he is a thriving member of the herd and he loves to hang out in the pig house or nap outside with Sugar. He is a special boy who needs sunscreen during sunny days because of his delicate pink skin. However, warm weather also means he can do his favorite activity, which is root around in the mud! Today, Slammy is bossy and outgoing, and has truly earned his place among the Sweet Peace pig herd!
